Ladurée Soho

When I told my friend Lauren that Greg proposed, her immediate response was, “When can we celebrate?!” It was incredibly sweet, and I was honored she wanted to share in my joy… and make the trek from Connecticut to see me!

We decided to meet at Ladurée. Ladurée originated in France, and makes my favorite macarons in the world. Every time I’m in Paris I make sure to buy a massive box of them!

To be clear, we weren’t meeting in Paris (sadly)! New York City has a few Ladurée locations, and since I hadn’t tried Ladurée stateside I figured this was the perfect time!

When you walk into Ladurée’s Soho location, it looks like any other Ladurée shop. There’s a glass counter protecting colorful goodies.

And comfy café chairs on which to enjoy your purchase.

But what makes Ladurée Soho unique is that in the back there’s a restaurant and courtyard where you can dine prior to eating your dessert. During the day the café is packed, but in the evening it’s quiet, with most patrons choosing to enjoy the upscale dining room rather than the more casual café.

The dining room is elegantly decorated. It was much too cold for the courtyard, but I’d love to go back when the weather is nicer and sit outside.

We started with rosé champagne because we were celebrating!

And while Lauren looked over the menu, I opened the thoughtful card she gave me.

I may have also snuck a few bites of bread too. They have such good butter at Ladurée!

For dinner, Lauren had the Seared Scallops with roasted cauliflower, crispy bresaola, smoked tomato purée and basil.

And I dined on the Truffle Mac and Cheese with penne pasta, gruyere, comté, fresh black truffle and breadcrumbs.

And then it was time for the real reason we were there: dessert!

Lauren finished her meal with the French Toast with maple syrup and Chantilly cream.

And I had the Rose Raspberry Saint-Honoré with puff pastry, choux, rose custard cream, raspberry compote, and rose-flavored Chantilly.

There’s a story behind my selection. A few years ago, a woman in our friend group (I’m not going to tell you who because this story is completely creepy!) posted a picture of this dessert on Instagram praising it as the best dessert she’s ever had. It looked delicious, so I took a screenshot of the post and had been saving it on my phone ever since, wanting to try it myself. Yes, I’d held onto the screenshot of her instagram for years (plural!) all in a lead up to this moment. Totally creepy…

Anyway, was it the best dessert ever?

It’s good, of course, nothing at Ladurée isn’t. It’s heavily rose flavored, so if you’re not someone that likes the taste of roses then this dessert isn’t for you.

I enjoyed it, but I think my expectations were set too high for me to label it, “the best dessert ever.” But I was glad I tried it, and that I saved that screenshot all these years!

I loved celebrating with Lauren, and am excited for what 2019 is going to bring us (she’s getting married this year too)! It’s going to be the best year yet!

  1. Lovely post. I often visit Ladurée in Knightsbridge for a pistachio macaroon or a slice of their hazelnut Plaisir Sucre. Reading this has reminded me that I need to visit again soon. Thanks for sharing
