My friend Matt texted me asking for Chicago recommendations. My immediate response? DEEP DISH PIZZA!
Hailing from Chicago, and traveling back there often, I consider myself a deep dish pizza expert (it’s a difficult job but someone has to do it)! So during a recent trip home for my cousin’s wedding, you can imagine how surprised I was when my brother suggested Pizano’s, a deep dish pizza spot I hadn’t heard of before! This meant two things: One, Josh may be a bigger deep dish pizza expert than I am (although I’ll never admit it to him!) and two, we needed to eat there ASAP!
For Pizano’s owner, Rudy Malnati Jr., pizza is in the blood. His father was the first to develop deep dish pizza and opened Pizzeria Uno, and his brother opened Lou Malnati’s! Talk about a house divided!
And now here we were, about to decide which deep dish pizza is best.
Upon Josh’s recommendation (stop being an expert, Josh!) we ordered the Mark’s Special with sliced tomatoes, basil, and fresh garlic. We added sausage to our pie because that’s just who we are as a family!
The pizza arrived piping hot and we greedily dug in, ignoring how much we were burning our mouths because it tasted so good!
I loved it, especially the fresh basil which gave the pizza a nice flavor. The sauce was seasoned flawlessly and absolutely delicious. Plus there was a perfect amount of cheese, unlike at Giordano’s.
The crust, while good, was hard to cut through, and I wish the restaurant had given us something stronger than butterknives to use. But that’s really my only complaint, the cutlery.
But was it as good as my previous favorite, Lou Malnati’s?
It was a really tough call. Both deep dish pizzas are noteworthy, and are now my two favorites in the city. But in the end, I still think Lou Malnati’s is the pinnacle of Chicago deep dish pizza. Josh (the real pizza expert?) disagrees, and says that Pizano’s is now his favorite.
Talk about another house divided!

After stuffing ourselves with pizza, it was time for my cousin Brittany’s wedding!
As the staff handed out glasses of champagne, we watched the gorgeous bride walk down the aisle.
Then after a quick ceremony it was time for dinner and revelry!
And while Josh and I may have different opinions on our favorite deep dish pizza, we still have the same dance moves!
And as it turns out, most of my family have the same dance moves too!
When we weren’t on the dance floor you could find us in the photo booth, getting pictures of all of the cousins together.
It was so nice being surrounded by all of my cousins again.
Congratulations, Brittany and Tony!
