Merchants River House

It’s the most wonderful time of the year: my birthday month!

I’ll be in Paris for my actual birthday (j’ai hâte de fêter ça!) so this weekend I got together with my favorite New Yorkers for an early celebration.

We started the evening at Merchants River House, a restaurant right on the Hudson River.

I began my birthday dinner in the best possible way: with rosé champagne!

Nicole ordered the Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna with ginger teriyaki and wasabi sauce on soba noodles.

Greg had the Fish and Chips with beer battered fish served on homemade fried potato wedges with a side of tartar sauce.

I had the Mac & Cheese topped with whipped sour cream, which reminded me of the sour cream Hungarians put on everything. But sadly this was the worst mac and cheese I’ve ever had. It had a thick layer of liquid at the bottom of the pan that was just gross.

Vickie selected the Shredded Kale & Quinoa salad with oranges, almonds, dates, sesame miso and vinaigrette.

Jess had the Organic Cedar-Planked Salmon served with smoked salmon horseradish cream and caviar.

We also shared the Warm Maryland Crab & Clam Dip.

And the Shrimp Tempura.

Overall I was not impressed with the food at Merchants River House. Nothing tasted particularly amazing. And, although our waiter was friendly and funny, the rest of the staff were standoffish and borderline pushy. The restaurant’s only redeeming quality is its location, since we had gorgeous views of the Hudson from our table.

But luckily we were able to end the meal on a fun note: with cake!

I always order my birthday cake from Two Little Red Hens, my favorite bakery on the Upper East Side.

Merchants River House doesn’t have a plating fee, which I appreciate since some NYC restaurants charge up to $10 per person which is absolutely ridiculous when you’ve paid for and brought the cake yourself. But the downside is Merchants River House lost the long white candles we brought for the cake, and so I was surprised when they served it with lame, tiny yellow candles.

Anyway, enough of the negatives. Let’s focus on the positive: cake!

Overall, I’d say give Merchants River House a miss.

However, I did still have a fabulous time, and that’s because of my wonderful friends and boyfriend who can make any occasion feel special. We laughed the entire meal, and I was really touched by the joy with which they celebrated my birthday. I am so lucky to have them in my life!

But my celebration didn’t end there. We finished the evening with an incredible sailing trip around Manhattan! You can read all about the adventure here.
