Matt is FINALLY here!
For years my British friend Matt has been talking about moving to New York from Liverpool, and every time I got my hopes up something would happen to delay the move. So when he told me he was moving in August, I figured I would believe it when I saw it. After he posted a few (dozen) pictures of NYC on Facebook, I was finally convinced he was actually here, and we made plans to meet for dinner at Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel.
As a side note, when I was taking pictures of the outside of The Kimberly, one of the doormen asked if my name was Kimberly. When I told him it wasn’t, he said that was too bad, since they have special gifts for anyone named Kimberly.
So if your name is Kimberly you should definitely visit the hotel! And then let me know what your gift is, I’m so curious!
Anyway, Upstairs is located on the penthouse level of the hotel, and is a gorgeous rooftop bar and restaurant with stunning views of Midtown. You have to make the most of the remaining nice days of the year, right?!
I love Upstairs, and think it’s so pretty. Matt on the other hand prefers dive bars with cheap beers and sticky floors, so it wasn’t quite his scene. But he did have fun, and enjoyed the views.
Upstairs specializes in signature cocktails rather than beer (sorry Matt) so we ordered a round.
I had The Mistress (left) which is a cross between a Cosmopolitan and a Manhattan and is a mix of citrus, pisco and elderflower. I actually liked it, and I normally hate the way alcohol tastes!
Matt selected the Rum Service (right) because the menu described it as “the manliest drink alive!” It’s spiced rum with nuances of honey, fresh pear and lime.
While we waited for our food to arrive we munched on complimentary popcorn, which was actually really good. Much better than the free popcorn at dive bars, right Matt?!
For dinner we shared a few plates, including the Crispy Classic French Fries served with chipotle mayo. These fries are so good! And they helped Matt practice his American English because he couldn’t call them “chips!”
We also had the Spiced Duck Cigars with a pomegranate dipping sauce, and these were just ok.
And finally we tried the Truffled Mac & Cheese with Swiss and parmesan cheeses and black truffle peelings. Matt is the only person I know who loves mac and cheese as much as I do, and we usually end up ordering it whenever we eat together (like during this visit).
It’s so much fun having Matt live so close now! And once my friend Emma, his wife, moves out here my life will be complete!
Even though it’s open year round, you should definitely take advantage of Upstairs while the weather is still nice! To find out more information, click here.
Welcome to New York, Matt. It’s been waiting for you.
