I hadn’t seen my friend Ann (who has this cute lifestyle blog) in awhile, and we had a lot to catch up on. So we decided to meet up at Brooklyn Bridge Park for their free Movies with a View series.
The park is right along the water with stunning views of New York City. You never quite appreciate how beautiful Manhattan is until you’re outside of it!
The Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy hosts events throughout the year, like this Brooklyn Bridge Black Tie Ball I went to two years ago. But their Movies with a View is one of their most popular affairs, and takes place every Thursday evening in July and August.
We arrived at around 6pm and had plenty of space to stake out good spots. But if your group isn’t too big, you can still find good places if you arrive anytime before 7:30pm. This is a nice change from the Manhattan movie in the park events, which usually require that you arrive at the earliest possible moment if you want a place to sit.
The movie starts whenever it gets dark enough to see the screen, so in the meantime we had something else we could watch: the sunset over Manhattan… and all of the people taking pictures of the sunset over Manhattan!
Then it was time for the movie to begin!
The moving that evening was Casablanca, which was perfect since it’s Ann’s favorite movie and I had just gotten back from an incredible birthday trip to Morocco!
But then things became less than perfect when it started to rain, just as the movie was beginning!
Half of the park’s Harbor View Lawn cleared out.
But we decided to stick it out.
Luckily towels had been passed out at the entrance as part of a promotion, so we were protected from the worst of it!
We ignored the rain as much as we could and concentrated on enjoying the film.
About halfway through the film the rain stopped and we were able to pull off our towel blinders and get a good view of Manhattan’s stunning skyline. Not a bad backdrop for a movie, is it?!
I ended up loving Casablanca, and am glad I finally got to see this classic film. Plus I was surprised at how funny it is, with a lot clever one liners!
After the movie ended we walked along the river before heading home, with beautiful views of the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan at night.

Ann, I think this is a continuation of a beautiful friendship!
