Summer Hair Makeover at Cutler Salon

Summer is finally here (well… almost!) so I wanted to lighten up my look so everyone would think I just came back from a tropical vacation, rather than a day at the office.

I headed to Cutler Salon in Soho, a place I’ve long loved for their highlights and inexpensive morning blow drys.

I had recently paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to highlight my hair (not at Cutler – that was my first mistake!) and you couldn’t even tell I’d had anything done! It was a complete waste of time and money.

The before:

See, nothing!

So this time I went to Cutler and worked with Adrianna who is absolutely fabulous!

I told her how I wanted to lighten my look for summer, but still have a darker base. I mentioned dying the base darker than my natural color, and she suggested using a glaze for the base rather than dye. Apparently if I used dye, then when my hair grew out a little bit it would almost look grey, since my natural color would be a lot lighter. To avoid this would require tremendous upkeep, and I’m too busy living my life to visit the salon every few weeks! Instead the glaze would also darken my hair, but not to the extent my hair would look crazy when it grew out. And it’s easier to lighten hair that’s been glazed rather than hair that’s been dyed dark, so this will help as my hair grows.

Here we go!

Adrianna used foils and a balayage technique to lighten my hair. The foil gave the color more lift, and the balayage technique allowed her to paint my hair with more color on the ends so it naturally got brighter towards the tips.

Apparently this is the most popular technique for summer, rather than ombre. Adrianna says ombre is now outdated because its coloring is so solid. Now you know!

Then after the color set, Filippo cut my hair and had me laughing the whole time!

He started with wet hair and finished the look when my hair was dry, and helped my hideous bangs look less hideous. I’ve been growing them out for longer than I had them and can’t wait to be done!

Here is the end result. Isn’t the color so pretty?! And you can finally see the highlights!

Cutler recently re-launched its product line, and Adrianna and Filippo used them throughout my service. I loved how they smelled (the products, not Adrianna and Filippo!), and they made my hair look and feel amazing too!

But we weren’t done yet! Adrianna was sweet enough to curl my hair, since highlights look best when hair has more dimension.
