I keep lists for everything. It helps me stay organized, and nothing’s better than crossing something off of it. Most of my lists are task oriented, and therefore quite boring, but my favorite list has got to be the NYC burger places I want to try.
JG Melon on the Upper East Side has been on there for years, so I jumped at the chance to finally cross if off (and try those burgers)!
The restaurant is cash only, so come prepared!
We ordered, and only a few minutes later our food arrived.
The burger was good, so good in fact that I took off the bacon because I thought it was diluting the taste.
Is it the best burger I’ve ever had? Probably not, although I can’t say definitively which burger has been my favorite (after all, I’ve had so many)! But it is absolutely delicious, simple, and no fuss.
The fries are good too. They’re described in the menu as Cottage Fried Potatoes, which seemed like it was just a fancy way of saying flat fries.
Do I recommend the food? Yes, definitely.
But be prepared: the staff are notoriously gruff! And you don’t need to take my word for it. Online review after online review mentions their less than pleasant demeanor.
Our waitress and hostess were nice enough, but the minute we ate the last fry we were asked, “Do you want anything else? Because we have people waiting for tables.” Saying this to customers, and essentially shooing them out the door while they’re still chewing their last bite, is just so incredibly rude.
It makes me not want to recommend the restaurant, but I did like the food, so I’m torn. I’ll leave it up to you whether or not it’s worth it.

Just don’t take too long to eat it!
