Mela East

Sara hosted Marilyn and me in Toronto this past May, so we figured it was only fair to return the favor and invite Sara out to New York City!

On her first night here, we decided to take advantage of one of the last beautiful nights of the year and ate outdoors at Mela East, a Mediterranean restaurant on the Upper East Side.


The restaurant was recently renovated and the result is absolutely gorgeous!



Reunited once again!



We had to laugh at the scenic views from our table. You’ve got to love sidewalk dining in New York City!


We all decided on pasta (clearly a love of food is one of the reasons why we’re all friends)!

Sara selected the Gnocchi Pomodoro, which has handmade traditional potato gnocchi in a san marzano plum tomato sauce. I snuck a bite of course and it was fabulous!


Marilyn chose the Paccheri All’amatriciana which has handmade large tubular pasta with organic tomatoes, onion, pancetta and shaved parmesan. She loved it.


Andrea (Marilyn’s sister) and I both had the Spaghetti Carbonara, which is pasta layered with pancetta, crushed black pepper, a poached egg and shaved parmesan.

Normally it comes with spaghetti, but I asked for the tubular pasta because I thought that it would taste better. I was right!



The kitchen accidentally made my dish with spaghetti the first time around, and as they were fixing my order the owner came by to apologize and comp my meal. He also sent over a bottle of wine with his compliments.

Now that we had more wine, everyone was glad that the kitchen messed up my order!


So in summary, the food was good, the owner was overly generous, and we left full and a little bit tipsy. All in all it was a good night!
