Earlier this month, Anton and I escaped the city for the fresh air of the Pocono Mountains. But instead of spending the weekend outdoors, we ended up spending most of it inside a casino. Luckily, the casino was a lot of fun!
We stayed at the Mount Airy Casino Resort, and I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the inside. Several years ago, Mount Airy was sold, torn down, and rebuilt. So while many people may associate hotels in The Poconos with gaudy heart-shaped tubs and circle beds, Mount Airy is modern, if still a little overdecorated.
There are several restaurants within the resort, serving a range of food from fried American dishes to sushi to steakhouse classics. There’s even a jazz brunch buffet, and while listening to love songs being sung over eggs benedict, we joked that it was the most romantic buffet brunch we’ve ever been to!
These are my top three Mount Airy restaurants:
You know Guy Fieri from the hit show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives, so it should come as no surprise that his restaurant is 100% American comfort food. Most of the menu is fried, and the portions are massive, so it’s not the healthiest of places, but since the restaurant is open 24 hours it makes for perfect drunk food. Not that we would know of course…
Anton ordered the Tavern Style Pork Shank, which is maple lager braised pork shank served over smashed garlic red potatoes and topped with parmesan bacon brussels sprouts. I liked the potatoes the most, and he preferred the brussels sprouts!
I selected the Bacon Mac ‘n’ Cheese Burger, which should come as no surprise whatsoever. It has crispy maple bacon, mac ‘n’ cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, super-melty-cheese (Guy’s words, not mine!) and a slathering of donkey sauce on a garlic-buttered brioche bun. It was fine, but didn’t amaze me, sadly.
At least the fries are fun! Every order comes with three different kinds!
#2 Lucky 8
We both really liked this sushi restaurant! It was fun sitting at the bar, and watching our meal be prepared.
For drinks, we had the Singapore Sling (Tanqueray Rangpur Gin, Cherry Brandy, Grenadine, Sweet & Sour, Club Soda) and the Lychee Press (Ketel One Citron, SOHO Lychee Liquor, Sprite, Lychee Nut, Lemon). The Singapore Sling was my favorite!
For rolls, we had the Rainbow Roll (crab, tuna, salmon, cucumber, avocado) and the Spider Roll (deep-fried soft shell crab, avocado, cucumber, eel sauce). The rolls were huge, and I loved the Rainbow Roll especially.
We also had the Steamed Lobster Dumplings, which were delicious.
This restaurant is absolutely fabulous! There’s nothing “resort-y” about it at all. Everything we ate was wonderful, and if it were a restaurant in the city I would go there all the time!
For drinks, we ordered the Ponche de Pera (sauvignon blanc, pear nectar, St. Germaine, contratto bianco, aperitivo) and the Bad Apple (Captain Morgan, snap, ginger syrup, fresh apple cider, cinnamon rim). The Ponche de Pera tasted just like summer, and the Bad Apple tasted like autumn! I’m an autumn girl, so that drink was my favorite.
We started with the Lobster Bisque.
And also dug into the Chili Pepper Dusted Calamari. Both dishes were delicious.
For our main course, we both selected the Skirt Steak, and they were cooked perfectly. Plus, I was able to introduce Anton to the joy of dipping steak into Béarnaise Sauce. You’re welcome!
When we walked into the restaurant, it smelled wonderfully like truffle oil, so we had no choice but to also order the Truffle Fries! They were so good!
Despite what it may seem like so far, there is more to Mount Airy than just the food!
It is a casino, and there are several floors of slot machines, table games, and of course, bars. I played poker in a casino for the first time, and it was terrifyingly exhilarating! I even came out ahead! Anton had a successful weekend too, and killed it at the craps table.
One of the evenings we headed to the Gypsies Lounge, where Mount Airy hosts its performers, including comedians like Amy Schumer and reality stars like Teresa Giudice.
We were “lucky” enough to see Gilbert Gottfried, a comedian with a “unique” voice and sense of humor. I didn’t care for him (and my ears were bleeding by the end of it!). If only Amy had been performing that night instead!
There’s also an indoor/outdoor pool that converts to a club in the evenings. Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, Lil Jon and Pauly D will all be performing there this summer.
Mount Airy also has a beautiful spa, and I had a wonderful massage one morning. The secret is to book the early time slots, because while everyone else is sleeping in (ahem… Anton), you’ll be the only one in the spa! And then you won’t have to deal with any annoying whispering in the relaxation room (my #1 spa pet peeve!).
We did make it outside on the last day, and had grand plans of hiking around the mountains and enjoying the fresh air. But when I opened the blinds that morning, I saw snow covering the ground and fierce winds blowing it horizontally through the air. The temperature? 22ºF. And this is April!
It’ll warm up, right?
No, no it won’t! We optimistically put on our sneakers, drove up to the top of the mountains, parked the car, and ran outside to take pictures, covered in every piece of clothing we could find (matching sweatshirts? Check!) It was so windy, and so cold, that we had to run back inside the car after a few minutes.
While Anton was setting up the camera, the wind literally blew me off this picnic table. Extreme hiking, indeed!
So while we couldn’t enjoy being outside in The Poconos, at least we enjoyed being inside! Mount Airy Casino Resort has the only entertainment in the area, so whether you’re in the mountains for skiing or for hiking, it’s the best place to stay.
