While I was living in London, I embraced all things British, and enjoyed every new experience that came my way. But there were times, on occasion, when I missed America, particularly American food.
It turns out I moved out of London too early. Because now fellow American Marissa Hermer has created a Soho restaurant dedicated to the best part of American food: hot dogs!
The menu at Top Dog is perfectly American, with hot dogs, burgers, cheese fries and milkshakes. I was so tempted to hand the menu back to the waiter with a “Yes. All of it.”
I treated myself to a Salted Caramel Shake. It was delicious, and tasted just like home!
For a side, I ordered the Cheesy Fries. The cheese wasn’t typically American (basically it wasn’t bright orange and strangely thick), so for good or for bad they didn’t taste completely authentic.
The hot dogs, however, were 100% American.
I ordered the Pulled Pork ‘n’ Slaw Hot Dog, which was covered in pulled pork, apple slaw and BBQ sauce. Normally I like my hot dogs plain (I know, I know) but this was a fun combination of flavors.
While I wouldn’t necessary recommend Top Dog for Americans just visiting London (you should really spend your vacation doing more British things!) it’s perfect for American expats missing home, and Brits who want an American experience.

After my meal, I wandered around Soho, which is one of my favorite London neighborhoods. My night ended with these words of wisdom:
Indeed. So are hot dogs.
