I just had one of the best haircuts of my life, even better than the time I went to Kate Middleton’s hairdresser! Jon Reyman, the owner of Spoke & Weal salons in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and now New York, worked magic on my hair.
Jon leads the hair styling of up to 30 shows every year at New York Fashion Week. He also styles numerous photo shoots for renowned magazines around the world, and has a long list of celebrity clients. Basically, when it comes to hair, he’s a BFD.
In May I cut my hair short (for me, at least) and while I loved the length, the cut itself was… awful. In fact, when Jon sat down with me to do my hair consultation, the first words out of his mouth were “who did this to you?!”
Here is the before picture. I’m not even going to show you the front, just trust me, it was crazy.
Jon told me that based on my hair type, I should never condition my hair. Ever. Apparently my hair gets weighed down easily by conditioner, and it doesn’t need it to stay shiny. This led to several back and forths of “you mean never?” “Never.” “Like, never ever?” “Never ever.” Until finally I decided to just trust the expert.
It’s been two weeks since my haircut and I still haven’t used conditioner. And it definitely helps!
Jon’s a big believer in cutting hair while it’s dry and straight. That way there’s no hiding behind the styling. I appreciated this, since my last haircut looked fine when I left the salon with it styled and curled, but crazy when I straightened it and saw the cut for what it was.
After discussing what I wanted, he got to work cutting!
This is one of my best looks, if I do say so myself:
Afterwards, Jon always tells clients to run their hands through their hair, and make comments on what they’d like to be different. He compares it to tasting a soup, and asking for a little more pepper or a little less salt. This way your haircut is a team effort, and you leave happy.
I loved the final result!
Thank you Jon for saving my hair!
