My friend Matt (the one that got engaged in Tennessee!) was visiting from London, so we did the one thing that New Yorkers only do when they have visitors: go to Times Square!
Do you see us? Or my umbrella at least?
Since the day was cold and rainy (thank you Matt for bringing the London weather!), we decided that seeing a Broadway show would be the perfect way to spend the afternoon.
Since SOMETHING ROTTEN! had been nominated for 10 Tony Awards including best musical, we figured that it would be a good one to see!
The show is a comedy that takes place during Shakespeare’s time, and he is portrayed like you’ve never seen him before! The Bard acts like a rockstar, has a cool leather jacket, and men scream and women faint whenever he walks by. He’s basically the Mick Jagger of the 1590s!
The story focuses on two brothers who are trying to write a hit play in the shadow of Shakespeare’s fame. My favorite part is when one visits a local medium, and is shocked to find out that shows in the future will involve singing and random dance breaks. He can’t understand why someone would want to see that! The scene then transitions into a catchy song and dance that is a mashup of famous Broadway shows.
Overall I liked the show a lot, and was really entertained. The only drawback was that it was presented as the funniest Broadway show since Book of Mormon. SOMETHING ROTTEN! was definitely funny, but just not quite as hilarious and irreverent as Book of Mormon. So I think I was just a little disappointed because there was so much hype beforehand.
But that being said, it is a great show, and is one of the best on Broadway right now. So you absolutely should go see it! I’m glad that Matt and I did!
You can find tickets to SOMETHING ROTTEN! here.
Enjoy, and try to keep your cool when sexy Shakespeare takes the stage!

I guess you’ll have to know a lot about Shakespeare and the old-day musicals to get all their jokes. I have heard the cast recording, and I have to say the showstopping “A Musical” is awesome! I laughed even when I could not see the staging.
It’s such a great song!
Did you catch all the references in the song?
Yes
Haha that’s cool! I have a blog post all about the song alone, so you might wanna check that out! It’s quite long though.
