Day Trip to DC

I had gotten to see my close friend Caitlin only twice in the last four years (in my defense, she was living in South Korea for a lot of that time!), so when I found out that she would be in DC, I knew I had to take the train down to say “hi.”

I arrived early on Sunday, before most locals and tourists were awake. There’s a magic to DC in the morning, when it’s just you and the monuments and the quiet. I sat down near the Capitol to wait for Caitlin, and would have been able to take a perfect, frame-worthy, tourist-free picture if it weren’t for the ugly scaffolding! This always happens to me when I travel!

Then Caitlin arrived, and we were finally reunited!

We walked around the back of the building, where again the Capitol’s facelift ruined my pictures!

Then we began to wander around, past famous sights like the Supreme Court Building.

Then we reached the Washington Monument, which I referred to as “that thing” when asking someone to take our picture with it in the background. Needless to say, Caitlin made fun of me for that for the rest of the day!

Turns out, it’s not that tall actually…

Then it was time to stop by our friend’s house for a bit.

We then wandered over to the Lincoln Memorial. Since I was in a dress, my pictures in front of it were boring. Caitlin, in jeans, was able to have a little more fun!

When I was little, my teacher told the class about the Lincoln Memorial (what else would you expect from an upbringing in the Land of Lincoln?!), and how the statue’s foot was higher than a grown man. When I heard this, I pictured Lincoln’s entire foot being the size of a person, and thus assumed that his whole body would be gigantic. So you can imagine my disappointment when I finally saw the monument and he wasn’t as big as the Sears Tower!

As an adult I’ve now gotten past that disappointment, but it still makes me smile when I remember seeing the Lincoln Memorial for the first time and thinking “that’s it?!”

The view from the Memorial is stunning.

So of course, it was time for another jumping pic! (Have you figured out yet why Caitlin and I are friends?!)

I’ve always loved DC, especially the sense of power and history that the city has. Everywhere you turn, there’s a famous sight commemorating an important moment in our nation’s past.

After spending most of the day exploring, we were exhausted. Or rather, I was exhausted. Caitlin has two kids, so this was a relaxing day for her! We decided to head to Ford’s Theatre for a bit of a break.

This is the presidential box where Lincoln was sitting when he was shot. It’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that you’re standing where this momentous event happened so long ago.

The theatre itself is small, but it still produces shows that are open to the public.

Afterwards, we headed across the street into the home where he ultimately died.

Then, after a quick trip to London, it was time for me to head back to New York.

It couldn’t have been a better day.
