Jess and I have always wanted to try a paint night, so we jumped at the chance to attend Art by Friends’ latest event at Professor Thom’s in the East Village.
The Art by Friend’s tagline is “Brushes Provided. Bubbles Encouraged.” Since I fully support the bubbles part, we headed to the bar to grab a drink before the class began.
This is what we would be painting. It can’t be that hard, right?!
Art by Friends is owned by two cousins, Tara and Christina. They are the nicest people, and did a great job of showing us step by step what we needed to do.
Our first instructions were to paint the sky, then the grass, then black circles to make into flowers.
So far so good!
Then it was time for the petals. Jess and I quickly realized that we were two very different students. I just started painting, embodying a “we’ll see what happens” attitude. Jess, however, is a perfectionist, and wanted to make sure that she was doing everything correctly. This may be why her painting turned out better than mine…
You can tell that they’re flowers, right?!
Some people had amazing paintings. I was literally blown away by the talent in the room (myself excluded!).
This was one of my favorites. The picture doesn’t do it justice- it was so pretty!
This was another one of my favorites, because it made me laugh. When your flowers are looking strange, you may as well make dinosaurs!
This was my finished project. Yes, I realize it looks like a third grader made it…
Although our paintings weren’t bad for us not being artists!
Art by Friends took pictures at the event too, and I had to laugh at this one. What exactly am I doing?!
Paint night? Nailed it!
Even taking into account my lack of talent, it was a really fun night. Art by Friends is very well run, and I loved chatting with the owners and the other painters. Plus, there’s something soothing about painting. It’s just like a spa day, but messier!

Hey, you can’t do any worse than I did!
