The holiday season just isn’t complete without attending a performance of the Nutcracker. New Yorkers have two main choices this season: New York City Ballet’s “classic” Nutcracker or American Ballet Theatre’s… more “unique” Nutcracker.
Since I’m team ABT, I headed out to Brooklyn’s BAM Howard Gilman Opera House for the company’s Young Patron’s Evening and opening night. You know, the ABT Nutcracker YPE!
The event began with a performance of the Nutcracker.
Wondering why ABT’s version is so unique? Well, let’s just say not every Nutcracker has the Mouse King wearing sparkly, hot pink high heels. Or ballerinas dressed as beautiful snowflakes who I’m pretty sure were supposed to be evil. And most Nutcrackers don’t have comical bumblebees dancing along with the sugarplum ferries.
It was definitely a fun performance, but with enough of the classical elements to please any attendee.
Afterwards, the Young Patrons’ Evening continued with a cocktail reception with the dancers. This is my favorite part of these YPEs – being able to spend time with and get to know the talented performers that we support.
ABT’s Nutcracker is running until December 21st, so get your tickets now, here.
And if you would like to be invited to these Young Patrons’ Evenings, you can join the Junior Council here.
And if you would like to be an ABT dancer… good luck!
