The day after I arrived in Houston, Bekah and I saddled up our horses and headed west.
We arrived in Austin (by car… same thing…) and headed straight for Austin’s best tacos, Torchy’s Tacos. Or as the restaurant puts it, “damn good” tacos!
The taco names are hilarious. Dirty Sanchez, anyone?
We met up with my BFF Drew and his girlfriend, Anacely.
Bekah and I had been dreaming about queso the entire ride to Austin, so we ordered some Green Chile Queso and Chips for the table! The green chile queso is topped off with guacamole, queso fresco, cilantro and Diablo hot sauce, and the chips are homemade.
It was so good, and was gone much too soon!
Bekah ordered The Republican, which has a grilled jalapeño sausage covered in shredded cheese, pico de gallo and poblano sauce on a flour tortilla. She thought it was absolutely delicious!
Bekah also got the Dirty Sanchez, trashy.
To translate, that means a taco filled with scrambled eggs, a fried poblano chile, guacamole, escabeche carrots, shredded cheese, and poblano sauce.
“Trashy” is a secret way of ordering the tacos, kind of like ordering In-N-Out “animal style.” When you say “trashy” at Torchy’s Tacos, you end up with your taco covered in delicious, melted queso. So hey, why not go trashy?!
Torchy’s Tacos also has a secret menu, which you can find here (shhhh). I chose the Jack of Clubs, which has fried egg and grilled potatoes smothered in black beans, tortilla strips and cheese, and covered in cilantro, sour cream and Diablo sauce. And for once in my life I decided to go trashy!
It was a massive taco that was almost impossible to eat!
Almost.
My favorite taco of the day, however, was The Democrat. The shredded beef barbacoa was absolutely incredible, and was seasoned perfectly! Plus I loved the fresh avocado, cilantro, queso fresco, lime and tomatillo sauce that came on top! I highly recommend going Democrat! And ordering The Democrat! Ha.
Anacely and Drew’s tacos looked delicious too!
They ordered the Baja Shrimp, which has hand battered fried shrimp topped with cooked cabbage slaw, pickled jalapeños and onions, queso fresco, lime, cilantro and chipotle sauce. It was so pretty!
They also picked the Brushfire, which has Jamaican jerk chicken, grilled jalapeños, mango, sour cream, cilantro and Diablo sauce. This taco was a hit as well!
The best part of the lunch was seeing old friends, but I must admit that the tacos came a very close second!
Torchy’s is right. It DOES have damn good tacos!
