Words can’t even describe how much I LOVE the movie Sound of Music. Growing up it was my absolute favorite movie, and I would annoy my family by watching it over and over and over again. In fact, when I was 5 years old I announced to my parents that I was going to change my name to “Fräulein Maria” in honor of the film, not realizing that fräulein was not in fact a first name. Thank goodness they didn’t let me!
You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found out that the Hollywood Bowl hosts a Sound of Music Sing-a-Long every year. Talk about a dream come true! My friend Ben also grew up loving Sound of Music, so I invited him to come along.
We couldn’t go without dressing up, so Ben wore his lederhosen and I wore drapes. If you’ve seen the movie then you’ll understand!
We arrived during the pre-show costume contest. My favorite entry, and incidentally the winner, was a group of women dressed in traditional Austrian clothes. They were holding a rope with numbers on it. Guess what they were? A long line of governesses!
The Hollywood Bowl was packed, and soon it was time for the film to begin.
Since Ben and I have both gone on the Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, during the movie we kept joking around, saying “I’ve been there” like it was no big deal.
See, I’ve been there!
My favorite part during the sing-a-long was when the song “Edelweiss” began. Everyone got out their cell phones and swayed along to the song. Awe!
If you love the Sound of Music even half as much as I do (because it’s really not possible to love it as much as I do!) then you have to go to the sing-a-long at the Hollywood Bowl. Nothing is better than singing every line and saying every word along with thousands of other Sound of Music fans. It will make you feel like a kid all over again :)
Auf Wiedersehen, darling!
