Yesterday Julie and I went to the California Strawberry Festival in Oxnard. Held annually on the third weekend in May, this festival celebrates all things related to the red, heart-shaped fruit!
The festival, celebrating its 30th year, had over 50 food booths, rows of shops, a build-your-own strawberry shortcake tent, concerts, celebrity chef cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts, and a strawberry tart toss, pie eating and relay contest. Fun for the whole family!
As soon as we got there we made a beeline for the drinks. Wine, strawberry beer, strawberry margaritas, and champagne were being served.
Then it was time to eat! Since it was the strawberry festival we figured that it was only natural to start with dessert. There were tons of strawberry dishes, ranging from the expected (strawberry funnel cake, chocolate dipped strawberries) to the surprising…ever had strawberry nachos, fried strawberries or strawberry pizza?! Me neither.
After so much dessert we were ready for some real food. The festival offered every type of food imaginable. I’m not exaggerating! Thai food, barbecue, sausages, pizza, corn on the cob, burgers, hot dogs, tacos…I could go on and on. We chose beer-battered garlic fries, fried zucchini and fish tacos. Notice our fried theme?
Stuffed and satisfied, we did some shopping at the vendors and then were ready to call it a day. But not before picking up some strawberries on the way out!
The strawberry festival was a perfect Sunday activity and well worth the drive up from LA. For more information on the festival, click here.
